Sing is perfectly fine. It's colorful, energetic, safe, and your kids will probably enjoy it—especially if they like singing or American Idol-style competition shows. The messages about perseverance and believing in yourself are solid, if not exactly groundbreaking.
But let's be real: this is Illumination doing what Illumination does—creating competent, crowd-pleasing entertainment that doesn't take many risks. The plot is predictable, the characters are archetypes, and the whole thing feels like a very expensive karaoke session. It's not Pixar-level storytelling, and it won't stick with you the way truly great animated films do.
That said, it's a perfectly acceptable family movie night choice. Kids will sing along, you won't be bored out of your mind, and there's nothing here that'll give anyone nightmares. Just don't expect it to become anyone's favorite movie or spark deep conversations about life. It's entertaining fluff—and sometimes that's exactly what you need.
