Is this channel better than Cocomelon?

Yes, significantly. While Cocomelon is designed for hypnotic repetition, Scratch Garden actually teaches specific skills like skip-counting and phonics patterns with a much higher level of intentionality.

Can I use these videos for homeschooling?

Absolutely. Many teachers use Scratch Garden for 'Brain Breaks' or to introduce new math and English concepts. They are great for reinforcing a lesson you've already taught.

Why are the comments sometimes on?

YouTube's automated 'Made for Kids' system occasionally misses videos or the creators may have specific settings. It's best to watch on a platform where you can control the interface, like YouTube Kids.

What is 'Banana Pants'?

It's the channel's signature brand of 'weird' humor. It’s harmless, silly fun that helps build a connection with kids who might find standard educational content too dry.

Screenwise Verdict

Scratch Garden is the rare YouTube find that feels like it was built by people who actually understand how kids learn. It’s not just loud colors and screaming; there’s real pedagogy behind the bops.

If you're going to let your kid on YouTube, this is one of the few channels worth whitelisting. It bridges the gap between 'mindless entertainment' and 'actual schoolwork' without being boring or preachy. Just watch out for the platform itself—YouTube's autoplay is always waiting to serve up something less intentional once the lesson is over.

Age Fit

Perfect for the 3-to-8 crowd. Preschoolers will dig the nursery rhymes and movement, while early elementary kids will actually benefit from the punctuation and math lessons.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

The tone is consistently positive, modeling curiosity and lighthearted humor without the frantic, over-stimulating energy of many 'made-for-kids' YouTube channels.

Imaginative

Original music and quirky concepts (like the 'Banana Pants' series) show a level of creative effort that goes beyond standard nursery rhyme covers.

Safe

The content itself is squeaky-clean and educational. However, because it lives on YouTube, the platform's surrounding algorithm and sidebar are the primary safety hurdles.

Enriching

Strong pedagogical value across literacy, math, and coding. It effectively uses music to help kids memorize phonics patterns and skip-counting.

Why It Might Be Great

Phonics patterns are taught through genuinely catchy songs that help kids internalize digraphs and punctuation rules better than a worksheet.
The 'Brain Break' videos are a sanity-saver for rainy days, giving kids a structured way to get the wiggles out through dancing and movement.
Includes foundational coding concepts and social-emotional learning, making it a well-rounded digital classroom supplement.
The original music is high-quality enough that parents won't feel the immediate urge to mute the television.

What to Watch For

The YouTube sidebar is the real villain here; while Scratch Garden is great, the algorithm might try to hand your kid 'Elsagate' style knockoffs once the video ends.
Some videos have comments enabled, which is rare for kids' content. If you aren't using YouTube Kids, keep an eye on the scroll.
The songs are extreme earworms—be prepared to have the skip-counting by fives song stuck in your head for three to five business days.

Conversation Starters

"Which dance move from the brain break was the hardest to do?"
"Can you think of another word that uses that phonics sound we just heard?"
"Why do you think they call it 'Banana Pants'?"
"If we were going to make a song about a math rule, which one would it be?"

Deep Dive

The 'Brain Break' Gold Standard

Most educational YouTube channels fall into one of two traps: they're either so dry they feel like a digital textbook, or they're so hyperactive they induce a literal headache. Scratch Garden manages to thread the needle. They've been at this since 2012, and it shows in the polish of their curriculum.

What makes them stand out is the variety. You can jump from a video explaining the nuances of the 'silent e' to a three-minute dance party. For parents homeschooling or just trying to survive a long afternoon, this variety is key. It’s not just about 'watching' content; many of the videos require the kid to stand up, move, and participate.

Beyond the Basics

While most channels stop at ABCs and 123s, Scratch Garden dives into things like coding logic and social-emotional skills. They explain punctuation in a way that actually makes sense to a first grader, and their skip-counting videos are a legitimate hack for memorizing multiplication tables later on. The animation is simple—don't expect Pixar here—but it’s clean, colorful, and doesn't rely on the 'brain rot' tropes of flashing lights and constant jump-cuts.

The YouTube Factor

Because this is a YouTube-first brand, the standard warnings apply. Even though the creators are intentional, the platform is built for engagement, not education. If you can, cast these to a TV rather than handing over a tablet, or use the YouTube Kids app with a strict whitelist. The content is 10/10, but the 'mall' it lives in can be sketchy. Use Scratch Garden as a tool for specific moments—a math supplement or a mid-morning wiggle-fix—rather than an open-ended babysitter.
