This is a workhorse (pun intended) of the early reader world. Catherine Hapka knows her audience—kids who are obsessed with ponies and need books at the right reading level to keep them engaged. The stories are predictable and the plots are thin, but that's actually fine for this age group. They're not reading for complex narrative; they're reading to practice reading while looking at ponies.
The 4.8 Amazon rating tells you what you need to know: parents are satisfied because their kids are reading willingly. The Pony Pointers vocabulary sections are a nice touch that separates this from pure fluff. It's not going to win literary awards, but it will get your horse-crazy kid through the early reader stage without tears.
If your child doesn't care about horses, skip it entirely. If they're pony-obsessed, this series will be catnip.
