Outer Banks is the teen drama equivalent of candy—addictive, entertaining, and not particularly nutritious. It's got all the hooks: treasure hunts, forbidden romance, class warfare, and beautiful people doing beautiful-people things in beautiful places.
The problem? It's also got teens committing felonies every episode, adults who range from absent to murderous, and enough underage drinking to stock a beach party. The show glorifies risk-taking and law-breaking in ways that never quite reckon with real consequences.
That said, it's wildly popular for a reason. The mystery is genuinely compelling, the friendships feel real (if chaotic), and it does tackle class inequality in ways that can spark good conversations. Just don't expect your teen to come away with great decision-making role models.
If your 15+ kid is watching, watch with them or at least debrief afterward. It's the kind of show that benefits from a 'you know this is fiction, right?' conversation.
