The K-Drama Gateway
If you haven't fallen down the K-drama rabbit hole yet, My Demon is a pretty flashy place to start. It’s part of a specific sub-genre of 'Supernatural Rom-Coms' that South Korea has mastered. Think Twilight but with better fashion, more corporate intrigue, and a much higher production value.
What makes this one work is the 'demon' himself. Song Kang plays Jeong Gu-won as a creature who is genuinely arrogant and detached, not just a misunderstood softie. Watching him lose his powers and be forced to act as a bodyguard for a human he finds beneath him is the classic 'fish out of water' setup that provides most of the show's comedy.
Beyond the Romance
While the marketing focuses on the leads, there's a fairly gritty murder mystery running in the background. The 'Abnormality' of the family dynamics in the Mirae Group (the company the heiress runs) is where the real darkness lies. You’ve got siblings plotting against each other and a mysterious killer in a mask. It’s this tonal shift—from a glowing, romantic walk in the park to a tense stabbing in a dark alley—that might catch some parents off guard.
For a 2023 release, it feels very modern. It’s fast-paced, the CGI for the demon's powers is actually decent, and it avoids the 'draggy' middle episodes that plague older dramas. If your kid liked Goblin or Doom at Your Service, this is an automatic win. If they’re new to the genre, it’s a high-energy entry point that doesn't require a history lesson to enjoy.
