Mudville is a charming middle-grade sports book with a dash of magic. The premise—a town cursed with rain for 22 years that suddenly clears when a foster kid shows up—is genuinely creative, and author Kurtis Scaletta clearly loves baseball, which shows in every page.
It's not going to blow anyone's mind, and it's definitely best suited for kids who already like baseball (non-sports fans might find it a bit slow). But it's a solid, wholesome read that models friendship, community, and acceptance. The foster care angle is handled with care, and the buildup to the big rematch keeps things moving.
At 15 years old, it's holding up reasonably well, though it won't feel as fresh as newer releases. If your kid is in a baseball phase or looking for something light and feel-good, this is a safe bet. If they're not into sports, maybe skip it.
