Meet Kit is the gold standard for historical fiction that doesn't feel like homework. It manages to take a heavy subject—the Great Depression—and turn it into a story about grit, typewriters, and finding ways to be helpful when things get hard.
While it’s over 25 years old, the story hasn’t aged a day because the themes of family and resilience are evergreen. It’s a much better use of a 9-year-old’s time than another mindless graphic novel, even if the pacing is a bit more deliberate.
