M3GAN is a legitimately smart horror movie disguised as a killer doll flick. It's got real things to say about our relationship with technology, the ethics of AI companions, and what happens when we outsource emotional labor to machines. The critical reception is strong because it works both as entertainment and as commentary.
That said, it's still a horror movie with murders and sustained psychological tension. The PG-13 rating keeps the gore mostly off-screen, but people die violently and the whole premise is unsettling. This isn't Chucky-level camp—it's played more seriously.
For teens 14+ who enjoy horror and are interested in technology, this is actually a solid watch with conversation potential. For anyone younger, or for kids who get spooked easily, hard pass. The doll aesthetic is deceptive—this is not a kids' movie that got dark, it's an adult thriller that happens to feature a toy.
