Let's be clear: this is not a show for kids, and HBO knows it. John Oliver delivers some of the smartest, most thoroughly researched investigative journalism on television, wrapped in profanity and British snark.
For adults and older teens (16+), it's genuinely enriching—you'll learn about topics from civil forfeiture to televangelism to infrastructure policy in ways that are both entertaining and substantive. The show's willingness to spend 20+ minutes on a single complex issue sets it apart from typical news coverage.
But the WISE score reflects reality: this is adult content through and through. The language alone would make most parents cringe if their 12-year-old walked in. Add in sexual references, discussions of violence and corruption, and an often cynical worldview, and you've got something that's brilliant for grown-ups but inappropriate for kids.
If you've got a politically engaged high schooler, this could be great co-viewing that sparks real conversations about media literacy and civic engagement. Just know what you're signing up for—and maybe preview an episode first.
