Look, here's the truth: Disney's 2019 Lady and the Tramp is perfectly safe and reasonably wholesome, but it's also the definition of unnecessary. The 1955 animated original has charm and artistry; this live-action version has... cute dogs with CGI mouths.
The ratings tell the story—critics were lukewarm (67%), but audiences were actively disappointed (49% RT, 2.8/5 on Letterboxd). That's rough. Kids might enjoy it once if they're in their dog-obsessed phase, but don't expect requests for repeat viewings.
It's not bad—there's nothing objectionable here, and it does remove the racist Siamese cat song from the original—but it's just so thoroughly mediocre. In an era where you have access to Encanto, Turning Red, The Mitchells vs. The Machines, and dozens of other genuinely great family films on the same platform, why would you spend 90 minutes on this?
If your 6-year-old specifically requests it because they saw the thumbnail on Disney+, fine. But this shouldn't be on your shortlist of movies to actively recommend.
