Is Incidents Around the House suitable for an 8-year-old since the main character is 8?

No. Despite the young protagonist, this is a hardcore psychological horror novel written for adults. The themes of child endangerment, terror, and family collapse are far too intense for young readers.

How scary is Other Mommy compared to Neil Gaiman's Coraline?

Much scarier and far more sinister. While Coraline is dark fantasy crafted for upper-elementary readers, Incidents Around the House is adult horror focused on psychological dread and domestic vulnerability.

Is there extreme gore in the book?

The book relies more on psychological terror, unsettling atmosphere, and emotional threat than excessive gore, but the supernatural incidents and domestic tension are deeply disturbing.

Why is this rated for ages 17 and up on Screenwise?

It is published by an adult horror imprint and targeted strictly at mature audiences. The narrative explores severe marital strain, psychological coercion of a child, and intense supernatural dread.

Screenwise Verdict

Don't let the eight-year-old protagonist fool you: Incidents Around the House is a relentless horror novel built to give adults nightmares. Written from the perspective of young Bela, the story follows her family as they are stalked by 'Other Mommy'—a malevolent entity lurking in the closet that constantly asks Bela, 'Can I go inside your heart?'

The book succeeds because it pairs supernatural terror with the real-world collapse of a marriage. As Bela's parents fight and strain, the entity grows stronger and bolder. It is a fantastic, deeply uncomfortable read for adult horror fans, but keep it far away from kids.

Age Fit

This is an adult horror novel, full stop. Do not hand this to pre-teens or middle schoolers just because the protagonist is eight years old; the psychological dread and themes are strictly for grown-ups.

Why It Might Be Great

Unflinching child POV: Narrative voice stays locked inside an eight-year-old's perspective, making the supernatural threat feel immediate and claustrophobic.
Marital drama meets creature horror: The entity feeds directly on the real, painful cracks in the parents' marriage.
Relentless suspense: Builds intense dread around a single repeated, eerie question.

⚠

What to Watch For

Strictly for adults: Despite having a child narrator, this is a horror novel designed to unsettle mature readers.
Child distress: The premise relies on an entity targeting an eight-year-old and constantly pressuring her for consent.
Marital instability: Heavy domestic arguments, emotional strain, and family breakdown throughout.

Conversation Starters

"How does seeing a scary situation through a child's limited understanding change the feeling of the story?"
"Why do you think the entity needs Bela's explicit permission to enter her heart?"
"In what ways do the parents' real-world fights make the supernatural threat worse?"

Deep Dive

A closet monster for grown-ups

Horror written from a child's perspective can easily stumble if the voice feels fake, but the narrative commits entirely to Bela's limited vocabulary and world. You see everything through her eyes: she knows her parents are unhappy with each other, but she doesn't understand adult resentment, which makes the household tension feel just as unnatural as the entity waiting in the room.

Why it belongs on the adult shelf

Parents looking for spooky books for horror-loving pre-teens should pass on this one. The entity's persistent psychological manipulation of a young child, combined with escalating domestic chaos, steps way past middle-grade horror like Coraline or Goosebumps. If you want a chilling weekend read for yourself after bedtime, it delivers old-school scares with real emotional weight.
