Is the assault actually shown in the movie?

No. The film is very careful not to be exploitative. You see the girl walking to school and then the immediate, devastating aftermath, but the act itself is not on screen.

Is it based on a true story?

Yes. It is based on the 2008 'Nayoung case' in South Korea. The film stays fairly close to the emotional reality of the family's struggle, though some names and details were changed.

Why does the father wear a mascot suit?

The daughter develops a severe phobia of adult men following the attack. The father realizes she is comfortable with her favorite cartoon character, Cocomong, so he uses the suit as a way to be near her and care for her without causing her distress.

Is this movie too depressing to watch?

It is extremely heavy, but it is not 'misery porn.' The second half of the movie is focused entirely on healing, community support, and the resilience of the human spirit. It ends on a note of survival and quiet hope.

Screenwise Verdict

Hope is a masterpiece that you should probably only watch once. It is a soul-crushing, beautiful, and ultimately hopeful look at the aftermath of an unthinkable crime. It is not 'entertainment' in the traditional sense, but it is a profound piece of art.

For parents, it’s a difficult watch because it taps into our deepest fears. However, the focus on the father’s quiet, persistent love makes it one of the most powerful stories about family ever filmed. Just make sure the kids are nowhere near the room when you hit play.

Age Fit

This is strictly for adults or very mature older teens. It is a brilliant film, but the subject matter makes it entirely inappropriate for children or anyone sensitive to themes of child abuse.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

The film centers on a father’s desperate, creative devotion to his daughter’s recovery, modeling incredible patience and family solidarity in the face of tragedy.

Imaginative

A grounded, realistic drama. The only 'imaginative' element is the father's use of a mascot costume to communicate with his daughter.

Safe

The entire plot is a massive trigger warning. It deals with the brutal sexual assault of an 8-year-old child. While not graphic, the subject matter is profoundly heavy.

Enriching

A masterclass in empathy, resilience, and the failure of legal systems. It provides deep insight into the long road of psychological healing.

Why It Might Be Great

Profound Empathy: It avoids being exploitative, focusing entirely on the family's emotional survival and the slow, painful process of reclaiming a life.
Incredible Acting: Lee Re, the child actress, delivers a performance that is both devastating and remarkably nuanced for her age.
Social Commentary: The film sparked real-world conversations in South Korea about sentencing laws for violent offenders, making it a culturally significant piece of work.
The Mascot Suit: The father’s choice to dress as Cocomong (a popular cartoon character) to respect his daughter’s fear of men is one of the most moving depictions of fatherhood in cinema.

⚠

What to Watch For

The Premise: This movie is about the aftermath of a violent sexual assault on a child. Even without graphic visuals of the act, the emotional weight is crushing.
Hospital Realism: There are detailed scenes involving the girl's physical injuries and the medical procedures required for her survival, which can be very difficult to watch.
Rage and Grief: The parents' initial reactions are raw and violent, reflecting a level of despair that might be overwhelming for sensitive viewers.

Conversation Starters

"How does the father's choice to use a costume show a deep understanding of his daughter's boundaries?"
"Why do you think the community's support was so vital to So-won's recovery?"
"What does the film say about the difference between legal justice and emotional healing?"

Deep Dive

The 'Nayoung Case' Context

To understand Hope (released in Korea as So-won), you have to understand the real-life horror that inspired it. The film is based on the 2008 'Nayoung case,' a crime so brutal it led to massive public protests in South Korea regarding the leniency of the perpetrator's sentence. The movie doesn't dwell on the criminal; it focuses on the girl and her parents.

A Lesson in Boundaries

One of the most striking elements of the film is how it handles So-won’s trauma. Because she becomes terrified of all men—including her own father—he begins dressing as Cocomong, a sausage-shaped cartoon monkey she loves. He spends hours in the sweltering heat of the suit just so he can be in the same room as her without triggering her panic. It’s a stunning metaphor for how parents often have to submerge their own identities and needs to meet their children where they are during a crisis.

Beyond the Tragedy

While the first act is a gauntlet of grief, the rest of the film is surprisingly focused on the mundane details of recovery. It shows the community helping the family reopen their small shop and the school friends who try to make sense of So-won’s return. It’s a reminder that healing isn't a single 'moment' of forgiveness or justice, but a long, boring, and difficult series of days where people choose to show up for each other.
