This is the rare 20+ year old movie that genuinely still works for modern kids. The magic system is so well-realized that children are still sorting themselves into Hogwarts houses at recess, and the friendship between Harry, Ron, and Hermione remains the gold standard for 'found family' stories.
That said, it's legitimately scary in parts. The troll scene, Voldemort's face reveal, and the dark forest sequences are not messing around. If your kid is sensitive to scary content, wait a bit or watch together so you can fast-forward through the intense bits.
The themes are surprisingly sophisticated—child neglect, death, identity, and moral courage—but handled in ways that feel meaningful rather than heavy-handed. Hermione being the smartest person in the room and saving everyone repeatedly is still revolutionary representation for brainy girls.
The 152-minute runtime is the main practical barrier. Younger kids will need a break or two. But if they can make it through, they're getting access to one of the most imaginative and enriching fantasy worlds ever put on screen, with genuine lessons about friendship, courage, and choosing to be good.
