Glory to Rome is one of those cult classics that board game nerds won't shut up about, and they're not wrong. Carl Chudyk designed something genuinely clever here—the multi-use card system creates this beautiful tension where every decision hurts a little because you're always giving something up.
The historical theme is window dressing (you're not learning Roman history here), but the mechanisms are tight. It's chaotic, it punches above its weight in complexity for a card game, and it rewards multiple plays as you start to see the combos and synergies.
The catch? It's hard to find and has a real learning curve. Your first game will probably be a slog as everyone figures out what's happening. But if your family is ready to graduate from gateway games and wants something with actual strategic depth that doesn't require a 3-hour commitment, this delivers. Just don't expect it to be easy.
