Christopher Edge doesn't write down to kids, and Fear Files: Hide and Seek looks like another win. It takes the familiar 'scary game' trope and gives it a sophisticated meta-layer with the Darkive database.
If your kid is into the paranormal or likes stories that feel like they could almost be true, this is a top-tier pick. It's spooky enough to satisfy horror fans without crossing into content that'll keep you up all night dealing with nightmares.
Best for the 9-12 crowd. It's the right level of 'scary' for kids who have graduated from Goosebumps but aren't quite ready for YA slashers.
Focuses on the friendship between Adam and Sol, though it tests that bond through high-tension horror scenarios. Christopher Edge typically avoids cheap cruelty in favor of character-driven stakes.
The 'Darkive'—a database of paranormal evidence—is a brilliant meta-narrative hook that encourages kids to think about evidence, archives, and the 'unexplained' in a structured way.
Middle-grade horror is designed to be spooky, not scarring. Expect psychological tension and 'abandoned town' vibes rather than gore or trauma.
Christopher Edge is known for 'brainy' fiction. This isn't just slop horror; it likely uses its paranormal premise to explore logic, skepticism, and human connection.
Christopher Edge has spent years winning awards for books that make quantum physics and space travel accessible to 10-year-olds. Seeing him move into horror with Fear Files is a treat because he brings that same intellectual rigor to ghosts and anomalies.
The standout feature here is the Darkive. By framing the series around a database of 'first-hand accounts' and 'banks of evidence,' Edge is playing with the way kids consume media today—think Creepypasta but with a much higher literary standard. It invites a level of skepticism and investigation that most middle-grade horror skips.
The core of the book is Adam and Sol. Their camping trip is already on the rocks before they hit the abandoned town. Using a horror scenario to force two friends to resolve their arguments is a classic move, but Edge handles it with more nuance than your average 'ghost of the week' story. This is a great choice for kids who want a story that's creepy but still feels grounded in real-world emotions.
