The Best of the Ego-Maniac Duck
By 1980, the 'holiday special' was a staple of network TV, often used as a way to repackage older theatrical shorts for a new generation. Daffy Duck's Thanks-for-Giving Special is exactly that, but it works because it selects from the absolute top-tier of the Warner Bros. library.
The core of the special is Daffy attempting to sell a script to a producer (who is actually a giant version of a classic Looney Tunes character). This allows the special to segue into The Scarlet Pumpernickel, a brilliant parody of swashbuckling films where Daffy plays a hero trying to save a fair maiden. It’s dense, fast-paced, and remains a high-water mark for the medium.
A Thin Holiday Wrapper
If you are looking for a show that explains the Mayflower or the Wampanoag, you are in the wrong place. The Thanksgiving connection here is purely marketing. However, there's something to be said for the 'Giving' part of the title. Daffy is the ultimate avatar of greed and ego, and watching him get his comeuppance while ostensibly celebrating a holiday about gratitude is a fun, if unintentional, irony.
One segment, His Bitter Half, is a bit of a weird inclusion for a modern family watch. It’s a 1950 short that leans heavily into the 'unhappy marriage' tropes of that era. It’s not 'offensive' in a modern sense, but it’s definitely the weakest link in an otherwise stellar lineup of parodies. Stick around for Drip-Along Daffy instead, which is a pitch-perfect send-up of Westerns that still lands today.
