Center Stage is the ballet movie equivalent of comfort food—not particularly nutritious, but satisfying if you're in the mood. The dance sequences are genuinely spectacular and worth watching on their own, showcasing real artistry and athleticism. The plot, however, is pure early 2000s melodrama: predictable love triangle, mean girls, the rebel who doesn't fit the mold. Critics weren't impressed (42% on RT), but audiences ate it up (82%), which tells you everything.
The PG-13 rating is earned—there's language including one F-word, plus romantic/sensual content that's tame by today's standards but present. It's not trying to be high art; it's a teen drama that happens to feature incredible dancing. If your teen is into dance, performing arts, or just loves a good underdog story with gorgeous visuals, this delivers. If they're looking for something with more substance or modern sensibilities, they'll probably find it dated and cheesy.
Bottom line: Great for dance-loving teens 14+ who can appreciate the choreography and don't mind some melodrama. Just don't expect Black Swan—this is much lighter, sweeter, and more formulaic.
