Cynthia Lord specializes in 'quiet' books that pack a massive emotional punch, and this is one of her best. It’s a beautiful, realistic look at the friction between a permanent community and the migrant workers who keep its economy running, seen through the eyes of two girls who just want to be friends and paint some bee boxes.
It’s not high-octane action, but for a kid who likes 'real life' stories or is starting to ask questions about how the world works, it’s a must-read. It manages to be wholesome without being naive, which is a rare trick in middle-grade fiction.
