This is Disney Channel doing what it does best: delivering a safe, colorful, message-driven musical that kids actually want to watch. The zombie-integration premise is a surprisingly effective way to talk about prejudice and acceptance without being heavy-handed (okay, it's a little heavy-handed, but in a way that works for 8-year-olds).
The songs are legitimately catchy, the cast has great energy, and there's zero content to worry about—this is as family-friendly as it gets. Yes, it's cheesy. Yes, the plot is predictable. Yes, older kids will probably mock it. But for the target demographic of elementary schoolers, it hits the sweet spot of entertaining + meaningful.
It's not going to win any awards for originality (the ratings reflect this—critics were lukewarm), but it's spawned a whole franchise because it connects with kids. If your 7-10 year old is into musicals, dancing, or just needs something genuinely safe and positive to watch, this is a solid pick for family movie night.
