Zathura is a solid space adventure with the Van Allsburg magic—mysterious, beautifully illustrated, just strange enough to stick with you. The sibling rivalry angle is real without being preachy, and the sci-fi setting is a nice genre expansion for picture book readers.
It's not quite as iconic as Jumanji (which benefits from being first and having that jungle mystique), but it holds its own. The 2002 publication date means it's not ancient, though the pacing is definitely more contemplative than today's picture books. Kids who love adventure, space, and a little danger in their bedtime stories will eat this up.
The 4.8 Amazon rating suggests parents appreciate it, and the movie adaptation (directed by Jon Favreau, no less) gives it cultural staying power. A strong choice for families wanting adventure stories that model cooperation without being boring about it.
