X2 is the rare superhero sequel that's actually better than the first—tighter plot, higher stakes, and it trusts its audience to handle real themes. The civil rights allegory isn't subtle, but it works, and kids who are ready for it will get a lot out of the 'what does it mean to be different and feared' questions.
That said, this is legitimately more violent than most modern Marvel—Wolverine straight-up kills people, the genocide plot is dark, and the tone is grim. It's not gratuitous, but it's real. If your kid is used to the quippy, bloodless MCU, this might feel jarring.
The 2003-ness shows: some CGI looks rough, the pacing drags in the middle, and the leather costumes are very early-2000s. But honestly? It holds up better than most superhero movies from that era. If your tween is into X-Men or ready for something with more bite than Disney+, this is a solid pick.
