Here's the thing: this movie has a 62-point gap between critics and audiences, which tells you everything. It's a Lifetime movie with a bigger budget and prettier marshes. Book fans (mostly adult women) adored it; film critics found it plodding and manipulative.
For teens, it's a mixed bag. The nature cinematography is genuinely gorgeous, and there's something appealing about a girl who raises herself and becomes a published naturalist. But the pacing is molasses-slow, the romance is problematic (abusive boyfriend alert), and the murder mystery resolution is... let's say morally complicated.
The safety concerns are real: domestic violence, abandonment trauma, attempted rape, and a murder. This isn't light viewing. Common Sense Media's 14+ rating is spot-on, but even then, it depends on the kid. Sensitive viewers or those with trauma histories should probably skip it.
Bottom line: if your teen loved the book, they'll probably want to see it. If they're going in cold, prepare them for a slow, heavy, Southern Gothic melodrama that's more Nicholas Sparks than true thriller. It's not terrible, but it's not great either—just aggressively fine.
