Webtoon is the wild west of digital comics—genuinely creative and internationally diverse, but also a content moderation nightmare for parents.
The platform hosts everything from adorable slice-of-life stories to graphic horror and sexually explicit romance, all accessible with a few taps. The 12+ App Store rating is laughable when popular series feature content that would earn R ratings as films. Parent reviews consistently flag this disconnect.
For older teens who can navigate mature content responsibly, there's real value here: exposure to Korean and Japanese storytelling traditions, diverse characters and perspectives, and a legitimate creative outlet through CANVAS. The format is genuinely engaging for digital-native kids.
But for younger kids? This requires helicopter-level supervision. You can't just hand a 10-year-old this app and hope the algorithm keeps them safe—it won't. Kids Mode is a fig leaf, not a solution.
If you're going to allow Webtoon, treat it like you would unrestricted YouTube access: vet specific series, check in regularly, and be prepared to have conversations about why some content isn't appropriate yet. Or just wait until high school.
