Wargroove is basically Advance Wars with a medieval fantasy coat of paint, and that's genuinely great news for parents. It's a proper strategy game that requires actual thinking—your kid will learn resource management, tactical planning, and how to anticipate consequences several moves ahead.
The pixel art style keeps the warfare cartoonish and abstract, so you're not dealing with realistic violence. The real win here is the complete absence of microtransactions, loot boxes, or any of the manipulative garbage that plagues modern gaming. You pay once, you get the whole game, and the creative tools are actually robust enough to keep engaged kids busy for months.
The multiplayer is local (couch co-op), which means actual human interaction rather than screaming at strangers online. The user interaction feature for sharing custom content is a mild wildcard, but without chat functionality, the risks are minimal.
It's not going to teach them calculus, but it will exercise their brain in ways that mindless action games won't. If your kid has the patience for chess or enjoys puzzle games, this is a solid pick.
