Let's be honest: this movie is a miss. The 2012 Total Recall remake took a fascinating Philip K. Dick concept about memory, reality, and identity, and turned it into a generic, CGI-heavy action slog that neither critics (30% RT) nor audiences (47% RT) enjoyed.
It's violent throughout—constant gunfights, explosions, people dying—so it's absolutely not appropriate for kids or young teens. Common Sense Media pegs it at 15+, and that feels right.
But here's the thing: even for older teens who can handle the violence, this movie is just... boring. It's a remake that strips away the weird, memorable elements of the original and replaces them with forgettable chase sequences. Your teen could watch it and forget it existed by next week.
If you want to explore these ideas with your family, read Philip K. Dick's story or watch the 1990 version (which has its own content issues but at least has personality). This 2012 version? Skip it. There are better sci-fi action movies that actually deliver on both action AND ideas.
