Look, Top Gun is a cultural phenomenon and the aerial sequences are legitimately breathtaking. If you're an aviation nerd or grew up in the 80s, it hits different.
But let's be real: for modern kids, this is a tough sell. The pacing drags, the plot is tissue-thin, and the gender politics are rough. Maverick's 'romantic' pursuit of Charlie would get him a restraining order today, not the girl. The machismo is so thick you could cut it with a knife.
Goose's death is genuinely heavy and will wreck sensitive viewers—it's not a light popcorn moment. And despite the PG rating, there's sexual content that would easily be PG-13 today.
The movie glorifies recklessness without real consequences, offers minimal character growth, and substitutes spectacle for substance. It's entertainment, sure, but enrichment? Nah. Most kids under 13 will tap out from boredom within 30 minutes.
If your teen loves aviation or military stuff, go for it—but use it as a springboard to talk about consent, consequences, and how masculinity has (thankfully) evolved. Otherwise, maybe just watch the volleyball scene on YouTube and call it a day.
