If your kid hasn't read this yet, fix that. It’s one of the few 'school books' that kids actually enjoy because it doesn't lead with the tragedy—it leads with a family you actually want to hang out with. By the time the Watsons reach Birmingham and the tone shifts, your kid is so invested in the characters that the history feels personal, not academic.
Don't be afraid of the heavy ending. It’s a gateway to real conversations about racism and trauma, but it’s wrapped in a story about a big brother finally stepping up for his little brother. It's a 10/10 recommendation for any intentional home library.
