Here's the truth: The Sword in the Stone is a perfectly safe, well-intentioned Disney film with a great message about valuing education and curiosity. Merlin is a delightful mentor, and the animal transformation scenes have genuine charm.
But it's also really, really slow. Even by 1963 standards, this was considered one of Disney's lesser efforts—the animation is cheaper, the plot meanders, and it just kind of... ends. Modern kids raised on Encanto and Moana will likely check out within 20 minutes. The pacing feels like watching paint dry, and not in a meditative way.
If you're doing a Disney classics marathon or your kid is genuinely into old-school animation, go for it. But if you're looking for something that will actually hold their attention while delivering positive messages, there are dozens of better options. This one earns points for safety and wholesomeness but loses them for being borderline unwatchable by today's standards. It's not bad—it's just old and boring.
