Look, this isn't a hidden gem. It's a 2010 Disney attempt to launch a franchise that... didn't launch. The critics were lukewarm (40% on RT), audiences shrugged (53%), and it's basically been forgotten in the Disney catalog.
That said, it's harmless. If your 9-year-old is into magic and you need something to throw on during a lazy weekend, it'll do the job. The action is constant but not scary, Nicolas Cage is doing his unhinged thing (which is either a feature or a bug depending on your tolerance), and there are a few genuinely creative visual moments.
The problem? It's just... fine. Not great, not terrible, just aggressively okay. The story is paint-by-numbers chosen one stuff, the romance subplot is forgettable, and the whole thing feels like it was designed by committee to hit Disney action-adventure checkboxes. Kids won't be traumatized, but they probably won't be asking to rewatch it either.
Bottom line: If it's already queued up on Disney+ and you're out of options, go for it. But don't go out of your way. There are better magic movies (hello, Harry Potter) and better Disney adventures out there.
