It’s basically Sherlock Holmes if Holmes was a 22-year-old woman with a knack for the stock market and a pistol in her handbag. Pullman doesn't treat his young readers like babies; he gives them a complex, occasionally brutal industrial thriller that’s miles ahead of your average middle-grade mystery.
This is the second book in the series, and it’s significantly darker than the first. If your kid likes mysteries that actually have stakes and characters that feel like real people with real problems, this is a must-read.
