Look, Rocky Horror is a legitimate cultural phenomenon and a landmark in queer cinema. Tim Curry is magnificent, the music slaps, and the participatory midnight movie tradition it created is genuinely special.
But let's be crystal clear: this is not for kids. Not even close. The sexual content is explicit, the consent dynamics are awful (characters literally say no and are coerced until they say yes), and there's violence including murder. Common Sense Media says 15+, but that feels young given how much sexual content there is.
For older teens—17 and up—who are exploring queer history and identity, this can be an important film. It was revolutionary in 1975 for its gender-bending and sexual liberation themes. But it requires the maturity to recognize that the consent issues are deeply problematic and not to be emulated.
As a parent, if your 17-year-old wants to watch it, have a conversation about consent first. If your 13-year-old is asking because they heard it's "quirky and fun," the answer is a hard no. This is adult content that happens to be campy, not family entertainment that happens to be edgy.
