If you’re looking for a cozy British mystery with tea and crumpets, keep walking. The Responder is a jagged, high-voltage look at a man drowning in his own badge. It is one of the best things to come out of the BBC in years, but it is relentlessly dark.
Martin Freeman is unrecognizable here. He plays Chris Carson with a vibrating, low-level panic that makes your own chest tighten. It’s a perfect pick for parents who want a 'prestige' drama that respects their intelligence and doesn't pull its punches regarding the reality of the job.
