This is Aardman doing what they do best—gorgeous stop-motion, clever British humor, and charming absurdity. The animation alone is worth the watch, and critics loved it.
But here's the thing: multiple parents flag the sexism as a real issue, and they're not wrong. The movie leans hard into old-school pirate tropes where women are prizes or plot devices, and it feels dated even for 2012. Add in the drinking jokes and crude humor, and you've got a film that's more 'watch with your kids and talk about it' than 'throw it on and relax.'
If your family loves Wallace & Gromit and can handle some eye-rolling gender dynamics, this is a fun romp. But it's not Aardman's finest hour—that'd be Chicken Run or Were-Rabbit.
