Look, this is the textbook definition of a direct-to-video Disney sequel from the late 90s—it exists because the original made a billion dollars and Disney needed content for the VHS market. The bones are good: prejudice, forgiveness, breaking cycles of hatred, strong female protagonist. But the execution is just... fine.
The animation is noticeably cheaper, the songs are forgettable (you're not humming these in the car), and the whole thing feels like it's checking boxes rather than telling a story that needed to be told. That said, if your 6-year-old has watched the original Lion King 47 times and is begging for more Simba content, this will do the job. The themes are actually solid for early elementary conversations about judging people and choosing your own path.
It's not unwatchable—it's just aggressively okay. The kind of movie that exists on Disney+ for rainy afternoons when you need 81 minutes of lion-based peace and quiet.
