This is solid, well-made historical drama that somehow makes a story about speech therapy genuinely gripping. Colin Firth's performance is excellent, and the film handles disability with respect while showing how vulnerability can be strength.
The R rating is honestly a bit silly—it's one scene of therapeutic swearing that lasts maybe 30 seconds. The rest is completely clean. Many parents report letting their 11-12 year olds watch it without issue, though Common Sense Media's age 14 recommendation feels about right for kids who can appreciate slower-paced, dialogue-driven storytelling.
The real question is whether your teen will engage with it. This isn't a Marvel movie. It's a prestige period piece with excellent acting and important themes about perseverance and leadership. If your kid can handle subtlety and slower pacing, it's genuinely enriching. If they need action and quick cuts, they'll be checking their phone within 20 minutes.
