Look, this movie is a mess—but it's a beautiful mess. Baz Luhrmann took Fitzgerald's elegant critique of the American Dream and turned it into a 2-hour, 23-minute music video with a $105 million budget. Is it faithful to the book? Sort of. Is it watchable? That depends on your tolerance for visual chaos.
The critics were split (48% on RT) because while the production design is genuinely spectacular, the style often drowns out the substance. Leonardo DiCaprio is great, but even he can't quite save scenes where the camera is spinning and fireworks are exploding and Jay-Z is playing and you're just... exhausted.
For high schoolers reading the book, this can actually be helpful—it makes the story more accessible and sparks good discussions about themes. But it's definitely not a family movie. The drinking, violence, affairs, and tragic deaths are all there, and they're not subtle.
Bottom line: If your teen is studying Gatsby in English class, this is a solid companion piece. If you're just looking for a good movie? There are better options. And if your kid is under 14? Hard pass.
