The Expanse is genuinely excellent television—smart, complex, beautifully produced hard sci-fi that treats its audience like adults. Which is exactly the problem if you're looking for family viewing.
This is a show with torture scenes, graphic violence, body horror, sex, and the kind of moral ambiguity that makes for great drama but uncomfortable family viewing. It's Game of Thrones in space, complete with the "oh god I shouldn't have let my kid watch that" moments.
For older teens (16+) who are ready for mature content and love thoughtful sci-fi? Absolutely fantastic. It'll make them think about politics, ethics, physics, and humanity's future. The world-building is extraordinary and the storytelling rewards intelligence.
But be real about the rating. This isn't The Mandalorian. This is adult sci-fi that happens to be set in space, not space adventure that happens to have some adult moments. If you're watching with teens, you're committing to some awkward fast-forward moments and real conversations about violence and power.
