Superman & Lois is that rare superhero show that actually has something to say about family, responsibility, and identity beyond punching villains. It's genuinely well-made—88% on Rotten Tomatoes isn't a fluke—and treats its characters like real people dealing with extraordinary circumstances.
The family focus is the secret weapon here. This isn't just Superman with kids tacked on; the parenting challenges are central to the story. Clark and Lois navigate teenage rebellion, mental health crises, marriage strain, and financial pressure while also dealing with supervillains. It's refreshing.
That said, this is firmly teen territory. The 14+ rating is accurate—there's real violence, character deaths, and heavy emotional content around depression and family trauma. It's not going to traumatize your 14-year-old, but it's also not Incredibles-level family viewing.
If you've got a high schooler who likes superhero stuff but is aging out of the lighter Marvel fare, this is a solid pick. It's got action, heart, and actual substance. Just maybe watch the first episode yourself first if you've got a younger or more sensitive teen.
