Look, Stormbreaker had potential—Anthony Horowitz's Alex Rider books are genuinely fun YA spy fiction. But this 2006 adaptation is a textbook example of how not to bring a beloved series to screen.
The critics weren't being mean; they were being honest. A 35% on Rotten Tomatoes and 5.1 on IMDb tells you everything. It's got cheap production values, wooden acting, and a plot that somehow makes teenage espionage feel boring. The 2.2/5 on Letterboxd is particularly damning—that's film-nerd territory saying 'this is objectively not good.'
If your kid loves the books, maybe give it a shot on a rainy afternoon when it's free on Tubi. But know going in that you're watching a movie that feels like it was made for TV in 2001 and sat on a shelf for five years. The newer Alex Rider series on Amazon Prime (2020) is reportedly much better if you want this world done right.
Bottom line: It's safe enough for tweens and checks the action-adventure box, but it's just not enjoyable enough to recommend when there are so many better options.
