Stick and Stone is that reliable picture book you reach for when you want to talk about friendship without being heavy-handed. It's not going to blow your mind, but it does exactly what it sets out to do: show kids how friends support each other through a charming, rhyming story about literal objects with feelings.
The illustrations are the real MVP here—Lichtenheld gives personality to a stick and a stone, which is harder than it sounds. The bullying element (Pinecone being a jerk) is handled gently enough that it won't scare anyone but clearly enough to spark good conversations about standing up for others.
It's a solid addition to any home or classroom library, especially if you're building a collection of social-emotional learning books. Not groundbreaking, but genuinely sweet and useful. The fact that it's spawned a whole series tells you kids actually like revisiting these characters, which is the real test.
