Look, this is widely considered the best Star Trek movie ever made. The themes are rich, the performances are strong, and that Spock death scene still hits.
But let's be real: it's from 1982. The special effects look like model ships on strings (because they are). The pacing is glacial by 2025 standards—lots of people standing on the bridge talking about strategy. If your kid hasn't seen the original series, they won't know who these people are or why they should care.
The ear-slug scene is genuinely creepy, and Spock's death will make sensitive kids cry. But if you've got a 10-year-old who's already into Trek, or a kid who appreciates slower, more thoughtful sci-fi, this delivers. Just maybe watch The Motion Picture first so they... actually, no, skip that one, it's unwatchable.
