Spy School is exactly what it promises: a fast, funny, action-packed romp that gets kids reading. Stuart Gibbs knows how to write a page-turner, and Ben Ripley's self-deprecating voice is genuinely likable.
It's not going to win a Newbery, and it's not going to spark deep conversations about morality or identity. But it will get your 10-year-old off Roblox for an hour, and that's worth something. The spy violence is cartoonish enough not to traumatize, the romance is innocent, and the humor lands without being mean-spirited.
If you've got a reluctant reader, especially a boy, this is a solid bet. If your kid devours it, you've got a whole series to ride. Just know it's popcorn, not a meal—entertaining and engaging, but not particularly nourishing beyond getting them to turn pages.
