Sonic Mania is what happens when developers actually care about making a good game instead of a monetization machine. It's a love letter to classic Sonic that kids today can genuinely enjoy—not just nostalgia bait for parents.
The gameplay is tight, the levels are creative, and there's zero predatory nonsense. No surprise charges, no chat with strangers, no battle pass FOMO. Just a solid platformer that rewards skill and exploration.
The main consideration is difficulty. This isn't Mario's gentle learning curve—Sonic Mania expects you to learn patterns, time jumps precisely, and handle some legitimate challenge. Younger or less experienced gamers may need patience (or a helpful older sibling). But for kids ready for that challenge, it's genuinely enriching in the way good games used to be: you get better through practice, not by opening your wallet.
It's also worth noting this came out in 2017, so it's not bleeding-edge, but the retro aesthetic means it doesn't feel dated the way a 2017 realistic game might. If your kid likes platformers and can handle some challenge, this is an easy yes.
