Silo is prestige sci-fi for the thinking viewer—it's got the slow-burn mystery and world-building that made shows like The Handmaid's Tale and Severance appointment viewing for adults. But let's be clear: this is not family viewing.
The premise alone (mysterious deaths, toxic wasteland, oppressive underground society) signals this is mature content. Without a clear content rating, we're flying a bit blind, but the 8.1 TMDB rating suggests it's well-executed. The problem is it's also likely dark, violent, and emotionally heavy—exactly the kind of show where someone gets thrown off a building or shot in the head when you least expect it.
For older teens (16+) who love Black Mirror or dystopian YA that grew up, this could be genuinely enriching. It asks real questions about truth, authority, and what we're willing to sacrifice for safety. But for younger viewers? It's going to be either too scary, too slow, or too depressing. Maybe all three.
If your teen is into dark sci-fi and you're comfortable watching together (or at least debriefing after), it's worth considering. Just don't let your 12-year-old stumble into this thinking it's another Hunger Games.
