Let's be crystal clear: Sharp Objects is NOT family content and shouldn't be anywhere near a Screenwise recommendation list for kids. This is dark, disturbing, prestige HBO television that earned every bit of its mature rating.
If you're a parent reading this because your teen asked to watch it—the answer is no. The graphic self-harm imagery alone (the protagonist has literally carved words into every inch of her body, and we see it) makes this inappropriate for developing minds. Add child murder, sexual content, and some of the most dysfunctional family dynamics ever put on screen, and you've got content that even adults find difficult to watch.
For adults? It's well-crafted, Amy Adams is phenomenal, and it's a gripping psychological mystery. But it's also relentlessly bleak and emotionally punishing. This isn't a show you watch for fun—it's a show you endure because it's artfully made.
The only reason this is being scored at all is for completeness. Keep it on your own watchlist, not your family's.
