Here's the thing: Shark Tale was considered mediocre when it came out in 2004, and twenty years haven't been kind to it. The critics panned it (35% on Rotten Tomatoes), audiences were lukewarm (46%), and it's basically remembered as 'that other fish movie that wasn't Finding Nemo.'
The biggest issue isn't safety—it's fine on that front—it's that the movie is built on a foundation of materialism, celebrity worship, and con-artistry that feels especially hollow now. Oscar is a hustler who lies his way to fame, and while there's eventually a 'be yourself' message, you have to wade through 75 minutes of cynical, frenetic nonsense to get there.
The pop-culture references (Shark Tale? Get it? Like... Scarface? No? Your kid definitely doesn't either) and celebrity voice cameos were already dated by 2010. In 2025, this is basically unwatchable for anyone who didn't grow up with it, and even nostalgia can't save it.
If your kid is 7-8 and you need something on Netflix that won't traumatize them while you make dinner, fine. But there are dozens of better options that won't make you want to throw the remote at the TV. This one's a pass unless you're truly scraping the bottom of the streaming barrel.
