This is one of the stronger Phase 4 Marvel entries, and it's not just because the bar was low. Shang-Chi brings genuine martial arts credibility, emotional depth, and cultural specificity that makes it stand out in the superhero crowd.
The 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes isn't inflated—people genuinely loved this. It's got the Marvel formula (quips, big CGI finale, post-credits scenes) but earns its emotional beats through strong performances and a willingness to let Asian culture be central, not decorative.
The action is legitimately exciting if your kid can handle extended fight sequences. This isn't quick-cut punching; it's choreographed martial arts that demands attention. Younger viewers might find some sequences intense or scary (the soul-sucking demon is genuinely creepy), but for tweens and up, it's thrilling without being traumatizing.
Is it perfect? No—the third act gets a bit CGI-heavy and the pacing sags slightly. But as a family movie night pick for kids 11+, it delivers entertainment, representation, and actual themes worth discussing afterward. That's a win.
