Secretariat is exactly what you'd expect from a 2010 Disney sports biopic: earnest, inspirational, safe, and... a little boring if we're being honest.
It's a genuinely good story—Penny Chenery was a badass who navigated a sexist industry and bred one of the greatest racehorses ever. The movie handles this with dignity and doesn't sugarcoat the obstacles she faced. For horse-loving kids (you know who you are), this is catnip. For everyone else, it's a perfectly fine family movie that moves at the pace of, well, a leisurely trot.
The 2-hour runtime and traditional storytelling style will test modern kids' attention spans. It's not bad—it's just very 2010, which somehow already feels like a different era of filmmaking. The racing sequences are well-shot, but there's a LOT of boardroom drama and period-piece dialogue in between.
Bottom line: If you've got a horse-obsessed 9-year-old or you're looking for something genuinely wholesome for family movie night, this delivers. If your kid needs constant stimulation or has zero interest in horses, maybe save this for a rainy day when you've exhausted everything else on Disney+.
