Let's be clear: this is one of the greatest films ever made, and one of the most important. It's also brutal, graphic, and emotionally punishing in ways that are entirely intentional.
Spielberg made this to educate the world about the Holocaust, and he succeeded. The film doesn't flinch from the horror—you'll see executions, mass murder, naked prisoners humiliated in camps, and three hours of relentless cruelty punctuated by moments of extraordinary humanity. It's meant to be hard to watch.
For mature high schoolers studying WWII or the Holocaust, this is essential. For adults who somehow haven't seen it, it's required viewing. But for younger kids? Absolutely not. Common Sense Media says 15+ and that feels right—maybe 14 for a particularly mature kid in an educational setting with discussion.
The WISE score is high because this is genuinely enriching and important, despite low marks on wholesome and safe. Sometimes the most valuable media is the hardest to consume. This is one of those times.
