Rogue One is the Star Wars movie that finally admits war isn't a fun adventure—it's costly, messy, and people die. It's brilliantly made, visually stunning, and thematically rich, exploring sacrifice and rebellion in ways the franchise typically avoids.
But here's the thing: every single main character dies. Not fake-out dies, not maybe-they-survived dies—definitively, on-screen, gone. For a franchise built on hope and happy endings, this is a tonal gut-punch. It's earned and meaningful, but it's heavy.
If your kid can handle that level of finality and sustained war violence (think Saving Private Ryan lite in space), this is genuinely one of the best Star Wars films. If they're still in the "heroes always win" stage, maybe save this for a couple years. The Darth Vader scene alone will give nightmares to the unprepared.
It's a war movie first, Star Wars movie second. Adjust expectations accordingly.
